1920's revival for Island Arcade

Chelsom's Island Arcade redevelopmentAs part of a £4 million scheme to redevelop the Villa Marina Arcade, a major landmark on the Isle of Man, Chelsom was commissioned to manufacture a bank of bespoke 1920 style replica lanterns together with a state-of-the-art contemporary canopy pendant for the box office.

Function meets emotion
Masterminded by Ellis Brown Architects, with supplementary lighting supplied by Luminaires, this stunning scheme revives the elegance of the twenties, when the arcade stood proud as a focal point for Island arts and entertainment.

Chelsom's Island Arcade redevelopmentThe eight cast metal lanterns are based on authentic Edwardian period designs, aged with a bronze finish yet brought up to date with low energy light sources and fine quality opal acrylic diffusers. With a height of 900mm and a diameter of 420mm these substantial pendants each house four dimmable 80W PLL lamps with an additional emergency 38W 2D downlight. The Art Deco zig-zag motifs within the metalwork reflect the original period detailing which is echoed on doors, architraves and glazing throughout the building

The octagonal frames support acrylic diffusing panels which are easily removed for ease of maintenance. Suspended on heavy gauge chains, the lanterns add period authenticity to the atrium which offsets the futuristic design of the canopy.

Chelsom's Island Arcade redevelopmentThe stunning semi-circular canopy light was a major engineering challenge, as the brief demanded a horizontal semi-circle to float weightlessly above the box office area. Initial drawings were submitted, then a scale model created for client approval. Restricted by weight and safety issues, the finished luminaire was carefully constructed from glass-effect acrylic and lightweight aluminium.

Suspended on invisible steel safety wires which are micro-adjustable, the canopy is lit with LEDs fixed into the metalwork which shine up and down onto self adhesive diffusing squares on the glazed sections. The LED power supply was specially constructed and housed within two boxes located at either end of the fitting, minimising any visual wiring. Within the box office, the circle is visually completed by a mirror image of downlighters recessed into the ceiling.

Chelsom's Island Arcade redevelopmentThe renovated Arcade is part of the restored Villa Marina Complex, which was commissioned by the Isle of Man Government Department of Tourism and Leisure. The Arcade was designed to incorporate an art gallery, cafe, retail outlets and a concert performance area providing an attractive and stylish venue for functions, conferences and entertainment.
